If you’re an Ellevest Digital, Ellevest Premium, or an Ellevest membership client, there isn’t an option to choose specific stocks or other investments that you want to include in (or exclude from) your portfolio.
Why? Ellevest is a fiduciary, meaning it’s our job to put your interests first. And basically, we don’t believe it’s in your best interest.
We recommend a personalized investment portfolio created specifically to help you achieve your goals. Those portfolios don’t even have individual stocks or bonds in them. Instead, they contain exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds, which are baskets of lots of different investments in one. (Here’s why we like them.)
If you were to choose (or exclude) specific investments, that could mess up the diversification of your portfolio. It could also accidentally place you in a concentrated stock position, which is risky. Finally, nobody can predict what will happen in the future, so buying and selling individual stocks isn’t a predictable, long-term approach to generating investment returns. Instead, we recommend investing a bit out of every paycheck, if you can, into broadly diversified portfolios like the ones we create for you.
